What are the best swim diapers?

swim diapers

Reusable swim diapers are the perfect accessory for every baby and toddler still in diapers, even if you aren't a cloth diaper family! Why waste money on a package of expensive disposable swim diapers when you can purchase a reusable swim diaper that does the same job, but is totally adorable? Reusable swim diapers work the same way that disposable swim diapers do. Neither are meant to absorb liquids and are only built to contain solid waste while in the pool.

When washing swim diapers, you can wash them with your cloth diapers or with your regular laundry. For times that your child has not pooped in the diaper, you can simply the rinse the diaper and not wash after every use. This will help the diaper to last longer and prevent harsher wear and tear. For times that your baby has pooped, flush the solids down the toilet and spray/rinse away any thing less than solid before washing.

A few tips:
  • You'll want a minimum of two swim diapers for each child, one to wear and one as a back-up for accidents. If your family spend more time in the water, you may find that even two swim diapers is not enough.
  • Wait until you are ready for the water before putting on a swim diaper. Most swim diapers do not have an absorbent layer and will hold any liquid when your child pees. This can be a huge mess for your car seat or your hip! An alternative option is to lay an insert or prefold/flat inside the diaper until you ready to swim. Remember no microfiber against the skin!
  • Most swim diapers do not contain SPF protection. Be sure to use sunscreen on your child underneath their swim diaper and swim suit.
A note about cloth diapers as swim diapers: Some families choose to use an unstuffed pocket or diaper cover as a swim diaper. This works well for many families. Be aware that concrete, sand and shells can cause damage to the waterproof layer of the diaper and that chlorine may be harsh on the elastics. Be sure to check the warranty on any diaper, as chlorine and other pool chemicals may void the warranty.

swim diaper
AppleCheeks | $19.50
     size 1 (7-20 lbs)
     size 2 (18-35 lbs)
Materials: Two layers of polyester mesh
Side snaps, both sides
Available 4 solid colors
Made in Canada
www.applecheeks.com

AppleCheeks Swim Diaper is one of my personal favorites! We had this swim diaper in our stash and loved the fit. The ruffled edges are not only super cute, but very effective in holding in any poop. This swim diaper is incredibly trim to fit under bathing suits and totally adorable on it's own. We were able to use the same swim diaper for two consecutive summers thanks to the wide weight range. The various snap positions allow for a perfect fit for every baby. The mesh layers allow liquids to pass through completely which is a plus with pool water (i.e. no saggy bottoms!).

Swim Diaper
Bambino Mio | $9.99
up to 6 mo (11-16 lbs)
     6-12 mo (16-21 lbs)
     1-2 yrs (21-27 lbs)
     2+ yrs (27-34 lbs)
Materials: PUL with terry lining against skin
Drawstring waistband
Available in 7 prints
Made in Europe
www.bambinomio.com

Bambino Mio's swim diaper is adorable! I'm in love with this fish print (aquarium). The terry cloth lining is soft and perfect to go against baby's skin. The elastics at the legs and waistband are perfect containing any solids. The drawstring waistband is hidden on the inside and helps to create a perfect fit for all babies. One downside to this diaper is that it is a pull down design which may not be fun when your baby poops. This design is very trim and will fit well under swim suits. Bambino Mio also manufactures adorable hooded swim ponchos!

swim diaper

Bummis Swimmi | $14.95
     small (9-16=5 lbs)
     medium (15-22 lbs)
     large (22-30 lbs)
     extra large (30+ lbs)
Materials: Cotton outer with mesh lining
aplix closure
Available in 4 prints
SPF 50
Made in Canada
www.bummis.com

The Bummis Swimmi is a favorite from our personal swim collection! We used the same size swim diaper for two summers and it was a great fit both summers. The cotton material on the outside may show some fading over time, especially if used in chlorinated pools. The aplix closure on this swim diaper is very strong and durable! You won't have to worry that baby will be able to open it in most cases and the stickiness will last with normal wear and tear. I have had people ask if the aplix causes snagging on mom's swimsuit while holding the baby and I did not find this to be an issue with this diaper. This swim diaper also provides SPF protection which is great for keeping our babies safe in the sun, especially if you plan to use it without a swimsuit over top. The Bummis swim line also includes matching swim hats, UV tees, tankinis, and the one-size Swimmi (see below).

swim diaper

Bummis Swimmi One-Size by Mini Kiwi| $23.95
  one size (10-35 lbs)
Materials: PUL outer with polyester lining
snap closure, both sides
Available in 5 prints
Made in Canada
www.bummis.com

If you're looking for a swim diaper that will last from your baby's first summer to potty training, the one-size Swimmi is a great option! This diaper looks and feels a lot like a diaper cover and works essentially the same way with the snap closure and rise adjustments. This swim diaper does have double gussets at the legs which will provide a extra protection for poop. The Bummis swim line also includes matching swim hats, UV tees, tankinis, and the sized Swimmi (see above).

Swim Diaper
GroVia | $14.95
     size 1 (10-19 lbs)
     size 2 (16-33 lbs)
     size 3 (25-50 lbs)
Materials: PUL outer, terry cloth inner
Side snaps, both sides
Currently available in 4 prints
Made ethically in China
www.grovia.com

New to cloth diaper fans, the GroVia Swim is adorable! I'm in love with this print (Adventure) and impressed with the design of this swim diaper. The lining is an extremely soft terry lining and the outer shell is TPU, just like used on all GroVia diapers. The double row of snaps on both sides create a perfect fit and make changes a breeze when accidents happen. The materials on this diaper are quality and I'm impressed with the design! This swim diaper is extremely trim and perfect for fitting under swim suits or used alone (because it's totally adorable).

Swim Diaper
iPlay | $13
     6 mo (10-18 lbs)
     12 mo (18-22 lbs)
     18 mo (22-25 lbs)
     24 mo (25-30 lbs)
     3T (30-38 lbs)
     4T (38-46 lbs)
Materials: 3 layers of polyester, including an absorbent layer
Side snaps, one side
Available in various prints and styles, including ruffles and board shorts
SPF 50+
Made in China
www.iplaybaby.com

If you are looking for options, iPlay's swim diapers are the way to go! These swim diapers come in lots of prints, solid colors, swim shorts and ruffle butts, as well as matching rash guards, swim tops, sun hats, and shoes! iPlay's collection is probably the most accessible as it's available at many national retailers (of course, as always, I encourage you to shop small!). The SPF protection on this swim diaper is a huge plus! This swim diaper is also lightly padded which is a huge plus for those times your baby isn't in the water. This swim diaper is a little bulkier than other options due to the absorbent layer, but this is something cloth mamas are used to. This diaper only snaps on one side, but those snaps make a huge difference when it comes to diaper changes.

Swim Diaper
Smart Bottoms | $15
     small (8-16 lbs)
     medium (16-30 lbs)
     large (30-50 lbs)
Materials: cotton outer with mesh inner
Side snaps, both sides
Available in 5 prints
Made in USA
www.smartbottoms.com

Smart Bottoms never disappoints with their prints and this is true for their swim diapers too. Unlike their regular diaper line-up, Smart Bottoms swim diapers are made with a cotton outer instead of PUL. The inner lining is made with fabric that helps wick away the moisture to prevent rashes from the wetness and rubbing. The side snaps on both sides make changes easy and double row of snaps creates a perfect fit at both the legs and the waist.

swim diaper

Sweet Pea | $14.95
one size (10-40+ lbs)
Materials: Polyester with mesh inner
Side snaps, both sides
Available in anchor print or two solids
Made ethically in China
www.sweetpeaclothdiapers.com

Sweet Pea Diapers is releasing it's first swim diaper in April 2016! One of my favorite features about this diaper is that it's one-size. Once you buy this diaper, it will last you until potty training. Another amazing feature is double gussets on the legs. That extra protection will give you a little extra piece of mind. This swim diaper is designed almost identically to Sweet Pea diaper covers and the rise snaps and cross over snaps at the waist is going to be very familiar for any cloth mama! The print shown above will not available for swim diapers, but there is an adorable anchor print or a couple solids to choose from.

You can find the swim diapers above at the links above, your favorite cloth diaper retailer, or my personal favorite, Kelly's Closet (affiliate link).

Be sure to check back as new swim diapers will be added! If you'd like to see your brand added to this list, please send me an email!

  1. Applecheeks are my absolute favorite, but the Bambino Mio concept intrigues me.

  2. This will be my baby's first summer so we haven't tried cloth swim diapers yet, but I have a Monkey Doodlez I am going to use to start.

  3. Is washing the same as cloth diapers? I, regrettably, did not cloth diaper so I don't know exactly what that entails. We'll be swimming a lot this summer so reusable swim diapers are appealing.

    1. Great question Paula! I will update the post with washing instructions. Basically, if there's no poop, you would just wash it like your regular laundry. If there's poop and it's plopable, you can just flush the solid in the toilet and wash the swim diaper with your regular laundry. If it's a little more liquidy, you can rinse it first and then wash with your regular laundry. Hope that helps!

  20. I'd love to try some of these. I have used imse vimse and iplay before. I'm not a fan of the iplay, but imse vimse worked well. I would not buy a brand unless it had at least one side that opens. Both sides is even better. Even if the aren't soiled they are tough to get off when wet if they don't open.
