A Cloth Diaper Story: Nicolette K.P.
One - Little E is 7 months
I "retired" from accounting to be a stay at home mom. I'm passionate about God, Family, arts & crafts, and learning to do things for myself. I'm constantly learning & reading. I love researching things! I have so many interests that sometimes it's hard to stay focused.
How long have you been cloth diapering?
I started cloth diapering E when he was about 2 weeks old, which is when our gift of newborn disposables ran out.
Why did you choose to cloth diaper?
I knew that my parents cloth diapered me, and I knew that it saved money as well as being a healthier choice. I started researching cloth diapers when I found out I was pregnant. It was an almost overwhelming journey to discover that the world of cloth diapering was much bigger than prefolds & plastic pants! (I'm so thankful for our modern diapers!!!)
I am just so happy that I am managing to save money & that I am making a healthier choice for my baby!
What diapers are in your stash?
I have (all pre-loved):
A couple Fuzzibunz
In addition to renting newborn diapers, I have some newborn Thirsties covers that I paired with their Duo Inserts (LOVE them!)
Favorite diaper in your stash?
BumGenius Elemental in Albert
Biggest cloth diapering challenge?
Getting into a routine to make diapering easy can sometimes be a challenge, but I've tweaked my routine here and there to now have a good routine that works for me & the hubby.
Favorite thing about cloth diapering?
Yes, cloth diapers are cute, and they don't stink like disposables, but my favorite thing is that my hubby is glad we are using them!
Hubby has been so supportive of something that lots of dads find "gross". He even said in regards to other dads of cloth diapered babies: "I don't see what the big deal is [for them]. It isn't any harder, and stuffing pockets isn't rocket science." I LOVE that he has not been difficult in the least about it! I mean, he even knows which diapers & inserts to use for little E's "nighttime" diaper!
Least favorite thing about cloth diapering?
My least favorite thing: wanting to try all the awesome brands out there!!! I would love to be able to buy from all the WAHM's out there & buy all the lovely prints!
Favorite piece of parenting or cloth diaper advice?
Buy CJ's BUTTer spritz ... it's yummy! The scents are awesome; I don't have to get my hands messy; the hubby likes it, and I have experienced no issues with using it all the time (I do use fleece liners in my diapers).
Also, to keep your diapers pretty: use liners & sun the diapers, and the insides will always look perfect!
Anything extra you'd like to share?
Cloth diapering win:
My sister came to visit for the day, but had forgotten diapers for her 18 mo. Her 2.5 year old wet her pants as well .... well, it was awesome to have my one size diapers available!!! I was able to use one as a diaper & the other as makeshift panties while I washed her panties! I could not have been able to save the day if I only had sized disposables!
Renting newborn diapers:
Renting has two big advantages
1- You can try several diapers without the huge expense (very good if one isn't sure about committing fully to cloth diapering)
2- You have diapers that fit perfectly instead of baggy/large one size diapers
