Fuzzibunz Microfiber vs. Minky Inserts

I have a very large stash of Fuzzibunz one size diapers. Unfortunately, I stocked up on them last summer, right before the launch of the new Elites. I had no reason to purchase any more diapers, but was so curious about the new design. The trimmer front panel sounded really nice, but what really intrigued me were the new minky inserts.  All of my Fuzzibunz came with microfiber. So what's so special about minky?

Some characteristics of minky inserts:
trimmer than microfiber
odor resistant
less staining
softer to the touch

I will agree that they are much trimmer than my microfiber inserts. What really caught my eye and had me curious about the inserts are claims from parents. I had read from multiple reviews on Facebook that some parents found the minky inserts to be MORE absorbent than the microfiber and some found them to be LESS absorbent. So I decided to do a test! A scientific one. Okay, as scientific as I can get in my kitchen. Who's ready to travel back to Science class with me?

Question: Which insert is more absorbent?

Hypothesis: I think that the minky insert will be more absorbent.

Materials:
1 Fuzzibunz Microfiber Insert
1 Fuzzibunz Minky Insert
1 Measuring Cup
1 Large Container
5 1/2 Cups of Hot Water

Procedure:
First, I filled my measuring cup with 5 1/2 cups of hot water. I chose hot because it's most like urine. I don't know that this really affected the test, but I wanted to be as scientific as possible.  I used 5 1/2 cups because I honestly had no idea how much to start with. Then, I put the minky insert into the dry container. I poured all of the water over top and let the insert soak up as much water as it could. This did not take very long, but I left the insert in for a few minutes just to be sure that it was finished soaking up the water. Next, I carefully grabbed the top corner of the insert and let it drip the excess water back into the container. Finally, I poured the left over water from the container back into the measuring cup to measure the difference.

I repeated this same process with the microfiber insert.

Results:
Minky: about 3/4 Absorbed cups
Microfiber: about 3/4 absorbed cups

Conclusion:
I don't really believe that either one of these is incredibly more absorbent than the other. The difference is so minuscule that I don't believe it really matters.

Final thoughts...
I would be curious to know if either of these inserts is more susceptible to compression leaks over the other. This is my biggest complaint about microfiber. I have had compression leaks with both of these inserts. I do love how much trimmer the minky insert is stuffed in a diaper. I have noticed some consistency issues in the size of minky inserts. Some of them are much wider than others.

If you would like to try minky inserts, they come with all Fuzzibunz Elite diapers. Or you could buy a 3 pack for $11.95.

The thoughts and opinions in this post are completely my own. I received no monetary compensation for this review. Fuzzibunz did provide me with a package of minky inserts for review purposes. I am not a scientist, but I did my best to be as consistent as possible!

  2. I am glad you mentioned that the minky inserts vary in width. I thought I had gotten a few wonky ones. My favorite for minky vs. micro is the stain resistance, for sure.
