On the eve of the Flats Challenge

I am taking part in the Second Annual Flats and Handwashing Challenge hosted by Dirty Diaper Laundry.  For 7 days I will be using only flat cloth diapers and handwashing them in an effort to prove that cloth diapering can be affordable and accessible to all.  You can learn more about the rules and why this challenge was started by visiting the announcement post.  This year there are over 450 participants from all over the world!

It's the night before the start of the Flats Challenge. I'm crazy excited! My regular modern favorites are spinning in the washing machine as I type. I have all of my flats prepped and ready to go.

What I'm using...
1 flour sack towel
1 random flat (unsure of the brand)
2 diaper pins (haven't decided if I'll be brave enough to use them)

Some thoughts running through my head tonight...
I ended up not making a camp style wash bucket. We were ready to buy the materials today, but I decided to give it a go with just washing by hand in the sink or bath tub. I just couldn't commit to the materials knowing I would hardly ever use them again. I decided if day one of hand washing was too much we could still always make the bucket.

My child has become super squirmy this week. Changing his diaper takes twice as long and I find myself snapping the covers while he is trying to crawl away. Sometimes distractions work and a lot of times they don't. A tub of CJ's BUTTer or the nose aspirator can only entertain a busy baby for so long. I don't know how many times I will get to try any of the cool folds I've researched. I'm sure the pad fold is going to become my best friend.

Despite the clause about nighttime diapers, I really want to try flats for the whole 168 hour commitment. I planned on getting a couple hemp flats for nighttime, but never got around to buying them. Tomorrow night I plan to put him in two cotton flats and pray for the best. Fingers crossed!

We have a busy week planned. Tomorrow, Noah is having his 9 month photos taken. No cute cloth diapers for this shoot! We are heading to visit my parents later this week for a long weekend. I'm not really worried about this being a problem. I'm really looking forward to the long clothesline in their back yard!

The forecast doesn't look great this week. There a few showers expected. I'd really like to dry my flats outside for a quicker drying time. I guess we'll see!

We go to church on Wednesday nights. I usually put Noah in a disposable for the nursery volunteers. I don't plan on doing that this week. I may put him in there with a flat or maybe I'll just keep him with me just this once.

I plan to blog every night about my experience. Check back in tomorrow to see how day one went!

  1. We used two flats (regular Osocozy flats) last night and had no leaks! Hope it works for you as well!
